Baby Carriage Fruit Salad

Several years ago, one of my friends was due with twins just one day after I was due. She was being blessed with two little girls but unable to travel home for a baby shower with her family, so our other friend and I took it upon ourselves to throw her a shower.

Of course, I was also very pregnant and as much as I wanted to do everything extravagant, I was running on limited energy and a limited budget. Luckily, there are lots of ways to throw an impressive baby shower on a budget – starting with Baby Shower Watermelon!

Everyone at the baby shower loved this Watermelon Baby Carriage Fruit Salad, and while the photos are not amazing I had to share this easy to make baby shower treat. It was so easy to make and everyone loved it. It also looked so cute sitting on the food table.

I made 2 Watermelon Baby Carriage Fruit Salads because she was having twins but if you are wanting to make only one you can but I would suggest using a large watermelon.

What is baby shower watermelon?

It's essentially a baby carriage fruit salad – a watermelon carved out, filled with fruit, and topped with a lemon meant to be a baby's face. You can even be great creative and add wheels if you want!

Watermelon Baby Carriage Fruit Salad looks beautiful as a centerpiece – so cute, in fact, that it took some encouraging to get others to eat it because it was "too cute to eat". But it is totally delicious filled with juicy fruit that is is the perfect healthy party treat when hosting a baby shower.

As long as you choose in-season fruit, this baby shower watermelon makes a fun and cheap dessert and centerpiece!

What fruits can I use in a baby carriage fruit salad?

You can use any fruit you'd like in this watermelon fruit salad! The only thing required is, obviously, the watermelon.

Be sure to keep in mind that this will likely be sitting on a table for a few hours, so don't pick any fruits that turn brown quickly. Berries, cantaloupe, grapes, oranges, and honeydew are all great choices.

If you want to make things fancy you can include chocolate covered fruits as well including chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered raspberries, and chocolate covered cherries.

I used a lemon for the baby face but you can also use a peeled cantaloupe or other melon. You do not want to draw on it with a marker though if you are peeling it.

How to tell if a watermelon is ripe

If the ridges in the watermelon are deep and well defined, then it is ripe. Watermelons with shallower ridges may not be ripe yet and will take a bit longer to ripen. The best way to know if a watermelon is ripe is to smell it—a ripe watermelon has an aroma that slightly resembles a melon.

Can I Make This in Advance?

Depending on the fruit you use, yes. I wouldn't make this more than the night before the baby shower but you definitely don't have to make it right before either. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to a day, so it's perfect for prepping the night before. After you make it, keep it tightly covered with plastic wrap in the fridge.
